After the Storm

Grab your coat, Jett.

The ocean had a bellyache

last night and, this morning,

it threw up on the beach.

Threw up what?

Sea glass, I hope.

Sounds like it was really SEAsick.

Get it, Grandma? SEAsick?

Because it’s the sea

and it’s sick?

I get it, Jett. I get it.

The poor thing had WAVES of nausea all night long.

Within five minutes,

Grandma was pumping her fist.

Yes! Seafoam green!

All I found

was a tiny piece

of a broken beer bottle.

Its sharp tip

pricked my finger.

When I saw the tiny

bubble of blood,

I pricked my thumb, too.

I sat on the shoreline.

I’ll do them all, I thought.

All ten.

But then,

out of the corner of my eye,

a heart-shaped rock.

I picked it up.

A perfect fit in my palm.

Grandma!

I dropped the glass

and ran down the beach.

For you.

She said,

Jett, you really are a kind boy.

And I almost believed her.
